Lu Yang's "digital reincarnation" is starring in a virtual presentation for Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning

Artist Lu Yang, famous for her mind-bending new media artworks and digital avatars, is stepping into the fashion world. As part of its Spring/Summer 2021 show at Paris Fashion Week, Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning recruited her virtual human creation “Doku” to star in a presentation called “The Art of Movement.” Update: Scroll to the bottom of this post for a video of the show.

The brand announced the team-up in a hyperbolic post on Chinese microblogging platform Weibo, saying that it would mix offline and online worlds to “launch an art movement that is beyond comprehension.”

In the trailer for “The Art of Movement,” Doku is seen powerfully crashing to the earth, before breakdancing in front of a variety of backgrounds that incorporate elements of Chinese culture and philosophy.

“The designs of [this collection] convey an understanding of profound Eastern thoughts. My personal works have focused on Asian cultures and Eastern thoughts. So in this regard, [Li-Ning and I] highly match,” the artist is quoted as saying in a promotion for the showcase on Weibo.

Doku previously made an appearance in the music video for “Playing on My Mind” by British band The 1975 earlier this summer. The virtual human, which Lu Yang calls a “digital reincarnation” of herself, is dressed in futuristic neon-adorned clothing and dances throughout the music video.
