From Eileen Gu to ‘the’ dress transformation, these Met Gala-related topics were hot on the lips of Chinese netizens

Monday, May 2, saw the return of the Met Gala, which abided by the theme ‘Gilded Glamour.’ Many stars took the theme to mean ‘lavishness’ and turned up dripping in gold, feathers, and silk. In contrast, others appeared in simpler outfits — a disparity that unintentionally highlighted the unequal distribution of wealth in the West during the Gilded Age, from 1870 to 1900.

The iconic fashion event made a splash on Chinese social media as netizens discussed their favorite looks of the night. On Weibo, the hashtag related to the Met Gala 2022 had accumulated over 330 million views at the time of writing.

Professional freestyle skier Eileen Gu, who won one silver and two gold medals for China at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, was a clear favorite among Chinese netizens, many of whom referred to Gu as their ‘friend.’

The face of French luxury brand Louis Vuitton, Gu wore a black strapless dress in leather and knee-high boots.

“Although her gown is not that long, she really made a presence because she is so confident and accomplished,” posted one netizen.

The professional athlete also took to Weibo to share her excitement about attending the gala: “Sharing my Met Gala experience last night. I have received your support and your thoughts. Hope when we meet next time, you are even healthier and happier.”

Actress Blake Lively also caught China’s eye with a dramatic dress transformation. The event’s co-host pulled off a theatrical display with the help of a handful of assistants, who untied the bows on her shimmering rose-gold gown to reveal a blue-green skirt — a nod to the Statue of Liberty, which has changed from a brown color to greenish-blue due to oxidation.

“The queen is here. She is forever Queen S,” posted one of Lively’s many fans in China, who have followed her journey since the star’s breakthrough part as Serena van der Woodsen in the hit series Gossip Girl.

Last but not least, Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh, who recently starred in the Hollywood hit Everything Everywhere All At Once, was also a firm favorite among those watching the Met Gala from China.

Yeoh’s elegant ensemble combined a green off-shoulder gown and a dazzling Tasaki necklace. Her head-turning look was described by one Weibo user as follows: “The jewelry is not as beautiful as her natural beauty.”
