NiuYun of Slurp and Pilipala: Bringing Dai-style Yunnan cuisine to cosmopolitan Shanghai

Even in a city of over 26 million people, Niu “NY” Yun is hard to miss. Sporting a shock of neon hair and colorful outfits, she can usually be found at one of her two Yunnanese food restaurants, Slurp and Pilipala, or behind the DJ decks generating visuals for one of Shanghai’s wildest LGBTQ parties. We grabbed a bite with the Kunming transplant to talk about her two restaurants, discovering her heritage through food, VJing, and some of her favorite childhood snacks.

In Conversation With: Brian Linden of The Linden Centre on sustainable tourism in China

Brian Linden was a blue collar kid from the US who knew almost nothing about China when he came to the country in the mid-’80s. Now he is actively promoting sustainable historical-based tourism with beautifully renovated heritage sites around Yunnan and expanding into the rest of China.

We visited him at The Linden Centre in Xizhou, Yunnan – a gorgeous courtyard property that once belonged to one of the great merchant families of Dali – to talk about his life journey from Chicago-based carpet cleaner to Chinese culture evangelist, his thoughts on the importance of sustainable tourism, and his hopes for the future of Sino-American relations in this increasingly divided world.

Since then, he has established himself as one of the region’s most compelling and interesting cinematic voices, becoming the frontman for the emergence of Tibetan New Wave, a grouping of arthouse directors that exemplify life in Tibetan areas.

His new film, Balloon, revolves around a pastoral family, with mother and father Drolkar and Dargye, whose way of life is put in jeopardy by the stringent fines that will accompany the birth of another child.
