China’s Got a Batman, and He’s Purple

Shanghai-based illustrator Chen Fenda’s comic series about a little purple bat called Afu is beautifully realized. Based in a town that is also populated by by a man called Da and a tall brown otter called Ta, the series has developed into a world unto its own with its own ethical and moral laws.

Every great piece of work should have a great origin story. For Chen he found his inspiration for his small purple bat while he was living in the tiny attic of his sister’s apartment.

He tells us his story about building a comic universe based around a cute, caustic and witty purple bat.

Rebellious rapper Jinx fights for fame on her own terms

Jinx Zhou makes music on her own terms, using the internet to promote her image and her music to the world, and freeing herself from the confines of being told what to do by parents, by managers, by anyone really.

Her story started in Changsha in Hunan province, where early on she showed a fondness for performing, by entering shows in her middle school and high school. Later when she went to university in Washington on the west coast of the US, she started creating videos and music to post online.

These videos led her to take part in variety shows in China, and dropping out of school in Washington and make a move to Los Angeles. A few years later she returned to China and began blazing her trail through hip hop music circles in the country.

This is her story.

Zheyuan breaks down the three steps for him to master a piece. First, he would need to translate the sheet music into braille, and memorize the entire sheet, as he wouldn’t be able to look at sheets when he plays. Second, with the notes memorized to perfection, he can start practicing the techniques. And lastly, he can finally interpret the piece with his own creative expressions.
