This week, Dabao gives us the lowdown on what Chinese people mean when they say “Company Livestock”社畜(Shè Chù). Are you a #社畜 too? Shèchù is a borrowed term from Japanese slang used to describe the kind of office worker who doesn’t raise a fuss over anything. Basically the ones who have chosen to let China’s crazy work culture wash over them, who’ve leaned into it even!
It is yet another slang term which China’s overworked millennial and GenZ kids are utilizing to describe the way their jobs have taken over their lives.
Slang Dynasty is a series that unpacks the wide world of Chinese regional slang, internet colloquialisms, and assorted street-level jargon.
