How important is hip hop music in China’s entertainment ecosystem?
This is a question that we’ll be discussing with HARIKIRI — a producer known for his work with A-list artists such as Jay Park, Higher Brothers and Vinida Weng — and Wes Chen, long-time host of China’s most influential hip hop radio show, The Park.
The pair, who have been embedded within the Chinese hip hop scene for years, will join us on Clubhouse this Thursday, February 25 at noon (Beijing time) or at 11 PM (Eastern Standard Time) to talk about hip hop’s underground roots, mainstream success and its uncertain future here in China.
Harikiri is best known for his work with some of Chinese hip hop’s biggest stars, such as Higher Brothers, Vinida and Bohan Phoenix. Having lived in Beijing in the early 2010s, the British-born rapper later moved to Chengdu where he met members of the Higher Brothers and Chengdu Rap House, whose tracks he produced and which feature his signature tag “Harikiri on the beat.”
Wes Chen is a podcast host and presenter who has headed up China’s longest running hip hop podcast The Park since 2006, proving instrumental in the rise of some of China’s biggest hip hop stars, and becoming the country’s most mainstream hip hop podcast in the process.
