This week’s photo theme is 2017 in Contemporary Chinese Art: a look back at exhibitions that stood out to us this year, for one reason or another.

Following the 2016 staging of Chen Tianzhuo’s overwhelming, art-damaged noise opera Ishvara, Beijing’s Long March Gallery started 2017 with the group show Trembling Surfaces, curated by School of Intermedia Art grads Guo Xi and Zhang Jianling.

One piece from Trembling Surfaces that has stayed with me is Feng Chen’s “Single Eye” (pictured here), memorable for its retro-future imagining of our coming VR ur-reality. Here’s the device Feng built in the process of creating the multimedia installation:
