Speaking of Mulan… Toronto’s Mulan International Film Festival (MULANIFF), which held its inaugural event last summer, has just announced that it will return for a 2nd edition from August 9-17, 2019. Last year’s festival was an impressive start, showcasing a diverse array of mostly young, emerging filmmakers, whose works were organized into categories such as “Made by Women” and “Portraits of the Young.”

MULANIFF 2019 will double down on this approach, showing films across three main categories: Lili vs. Leviathan (“to advance the appreciation of female filmmakers’ and actresses’ endeavours, as well as to recognize the identity and power of female protagonists in films”), Yin and Yang (“dedicated to films that reflect on social issues related to gender inequality, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation, thereby advocating equality and solidarity”), and Fountainhead (“celebrates and promotes emerging talents and their works with creative originality”).

As was the case last year, MULANIFF 2019 will also feature a China Retrospective component, including screenings of Jia Zhangke‘s directorial debut, Pickpocket, as well as The Last Emperor, an Oscar-winning, magisterial historical drama by the recently departed auteur Bernardo Bertolucci.
