Huawei Hits Apple with Shady Tweets and Donald Trump References Ahead of Mate 20 Release

The social media machine that controls our lives whirs into high speed, and no one is safe from the ever-tightening grip of Twitter shade. There was a time when vague insults on Twitter were for high schoolers, reality TV stars, and those who replied to Azealia Banks. But now that the leader of the free world is firing off passive aggressive commentary on Obama’s healthcare reform, we can truly say that shady Tweets have broken out into the world at large.

The latest perpetrator is an unexpected one – Chinese smartphone maker Huawei is throwing subliminals at Apple as it gets ready to launch its new Huawei Mate 20.

The string of snarky tweets comes after the debut of Apple’s 2018 iPhone lineup: the XS, XS Max, and XR. The phones were described by Apple’s CEO Tim Cook as the best iPhones yet, and of course they are (why would Apple release a new line of worse iPhones?), but the release raised questions among buyers: are these phones worth my money, or are they just an expensive and unnecessary upgrade?

Huawei seems to be capitalizing on that question, launching out a series of not-so-subtle jabs at its gilded competitor.

While the P20 is already out, Huawei’s Mate 20 will be launching officially in London on October 16th. So far, a few leaks have emerged, offering some clues as to the phone’s makeup. We’ve seen images of Huawei’s competitor to Apple’s AirPods, which can be charged wirelessly using the Mate 20 itself as a charging surface. And we’ve also learned some details behind Huawei’s AI camera technology, which seems capable of some impressive feats, such as automated zoom to keep subjects centered, or blurring backgrounds in videos to highlight the subject.

While the new line of iPhones all have 12 megapixel cameras, Huawei’s earlier release, the Huawei Pro P20 has a 40 megapixel camera, and a 24 megapixel front camera for selfies. And all of this is going to be working under Huawei’s new, highly-touted Kirin 980 chipset. So at least there’s a reason for the shade.

Guess we’ll stay tuned for the Mate 20, and y’know, see what that’s all about.
