Pop Star Teresa Teng Honored with Google Doodle for Her 65th Bday

Google really killing it with the China-related doodles recently… today they honor Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng (aka Deng Liqun), an artist who arguably did more than anyone to put Mandarin-language pop music on the map. Actually Teng, whose career took off in the late ’60s, sang in many languages, including the Hokkien dialect, Cantonese, Japanese, English, and Indonesian.

Teresa Teng died from an asthma attack at the age of 42, but today would have been her 65th birthday. From Google’s writeup:

Her music and talent was a dominant and influential force in Asia throughout most of the 1970s and 1980s. Teng was able to move her audiences as much with the sweetness of her voice as with the power of melancholy emotion. One of the “Five Great Asian Divas”, she was known for driving her audience into rapture, and often tears, over a career that spanned three decades.
