The NFT drops on September 9 and was inspired by Psy.P’s 2019 vacation in Phuket, Thailand

Chinese hip hop heavyweights Psy.P and KnowKnow, of Higher Brothers fame, and fellow Chengdu rapper Ty. have partnered with award-winning visual artist Aslan Malik to drop a non-fungible token (NFT) music video inspired by the vibes of sunny southern Thailand.

Titled “Phuket,” the NFT music video is being released on Binance NFT Marketplace, according to a press release from LABS, a subdivision of Club Media. Collectors will be able to choose from five versions of the NFT, which hits the market tomorrow, September 9, for 99USD.

For those of you scratching your head and wondering what this all means, here’s some background: An NFT is a unique data asset stored on a digital ledger, known as a blockchain, that is not interchangeable. NFTs can represent digital files such as photos, videos, or audio, among others.

According to the media release, 3,000 minted copies of the NFT are available for purchase, and a portion of proceeds will go to Crypto Against COVID, a charity initiative aimed at aiding “hospitals and other institutions around the world in combating the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

As for the music video itself, the content is inspired by Psy.P’s 2019 vacation in Phuket, Thailand. As a result of the ongoing pandemic, Psy.P and his friends have been unable to revisit the tropical paradise, so he decided to pay tribute to the sand, surf and sun in audiovisual form.

Psy.P, a Chengdu native, is most recognized as a member of the groundbreaking Chinese hip hop troupe Higher Brothers and hopes that NFTs will bring more opportunities to indie musicians.

“I’m a blockchain enthusiast, this is my first experiment on NFT with my friends, and I hope NFT will be a part of the future in [the] music industry and could bring more opportunities to independent music talents,” said Psy.P.

When taken together, the blockchain art piece is a digital token of our times — a unique collectible of an emerging creative economy.
