This week’s photo theme is 2017 in Contemporary Chinese Art: a look back at exhibitions that stood out to us this year, for one reason or another.
We covered Lu Yang’s Encephalon Heaven in some depth here, but it was probably my favorite show of 2017 for its all-immersive insanity, so it gets another nod here.
The photo above actually comes from a later event at ALL, a club in Shanghai popular among a certain set of underground producers, DJs, contemporary artists and promoters. For the inaugural edition of Lure, a new audio/visual night organized by Shanghai artist Cherry Wang, Lu Yang became a character out of her own work, DJing blisteringly loud, hyper-speed J-Pop tunes while her dancing digital avatars flickered on-screen behind her, leading a packed crowd to follow suit.
