Jinjiang Action Park, Shanghai’s oldest amusement park, is getting a makeover in 2027. Warner Bros. Entertainment has partnered with Jinjiang International Holdings to open up a “Making of Harry Potter” studio tour, the third location after London and Tokyo.

The Harry Potter studio tour is an interactive walkthrough exhibition, which differs from the typical action packed rides and themed zones found in parks like Universal Studios. This tour, instead, is for any die-hard Potter fan. It’s a chance to step into the Franchis’ wizarding world. For an immersive experience, iconic set designs will be brought to life alongside showcases of original props and costumes. Fans can expect to see locations such as Platform 9 ¾ and Hogwarts’ Great Hall recreated on a one-to-one scale.

Although the park is estimated to be smaller than its London and Tokyo counterparts, visitors should still expect to spend roughly three to four hours to complete the self-guided tour.
Shanghai has become a hot spot for theme parks in recent years. Shanghai Disneyland opened in 2016, Legoland is set to open this summer, and the Shanghai Happy Valley has undergone major renovations, now boasting over a hundred attractions across seven themed areas.
Shanghai Disneyland drew a whopping 13 million visitors in 2023, making it the most visited theme park in China. The Harry Potter studio tour is expecting a little less. In an interview with Yicai Global, Zheng Bei, the chairwoman of Jinjiang Paradise estimated that “the Harry Potter studio tour in Shanghai will draw around 2 million visitors [annually].” But shorter queues and less crowded spaces are a good thing, right?
Jinjiang Action Park itself opened in 1984 and introduced the Shanghai Ferris Wheel in 2002 — it was China’s first Ferris wheel over 100 meters tall. As part of the renovation, the iconic Ferris wheel will be torn down and replaced by an even taller one! Over the decades, the once bustling amusement park fell into disrepair, struggling to keep up with competitors. While most are excited about the new Harry Potter attraction, some netizens are upset that a core childhood destination for an entire generation of Shanghainese people will disappear.
