As Chinese Gen Z embraces traditional heritage, Nike and LABELHOOD look to ancient Longshan craftsmanship to redefine the ballet sneaker.

Over 4,000 years ago, an ancient art form known as black pottery (黑陶), or egg-shell pottery, emerged in modern Shandong Province, China. Today, the extraordinary craftsmanship that characterized Longshan Culture (龙山文化) is a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that has infused Chinese aesthetics from the archaeological to the contemporary period.

Amid Chinese Gen Z’s embrace of fashion aesthetics that draw from traditional culture, the recent Nike Shox Z Calistra x Labelhood drop responds to this trend by artfully blending together ancient Longshan craftsmanship with modern design. Shanghai-based fashion incubator Labelhood’s mission of empowering Chinese design at a global level is what really helps this collab shine through in the design philosophy. This was best seen in person when they held the official launch part at its Labelhood House in Jing’an District last month.

Like the ceramics themselves, the ballet-inspired sneakers not only boast a sleek, black lacquer-like exterior but are also said to act as a vessel (容器) carrying Chinese cultural history into the present. However, rather than constraining its contents, the vessel provides “a structure that allows creativity to grow.”

The sneaker straps feature buckles inspired by the begonia lattice windows (海棠窗格) associated with the classical gardens of Jiangnan, which can be paired with three interchangeable shoelace styles. Meanwhile, the bold red detailing (reflecting Labelhood’s signature color) of the sneaker’s interior, outsole, and columnar Shox heel creates a sharp, yin-and-yang-style contrast that mirrors the fusion of performance-driven sportswear and artisanal cultural heritage.

Ancient black pottery, often less than 1 mm thick, was extremely fragile and underwent a meticulous firing process, which ultimately turned the ceramics black through carbon absorption. The finesse required to produce black pottery without destroying the vessel—something that artists even struggle to replicate today—is reminiscent of the precision required to strike an effective balance between heritage, functionality, and fashion.
