If you’re looking for (another) sign to visit Shenzhen this summer, this is it. On July 28, the highly anticipated Shenzhen Natural History Museum officially opened its doors, and it’s nothing short of a masterpiece. Costing a casual 3.5 billion RMB (approximately 517 million USD), this massive institution goes well beyond your typical collection of dusty rocks in glass boxes—it’s a living, breathing landscape designed to fossilize you in absolute awe.

But before we go through its doors, let’s talk about the design, as it’s very much giving main character energy as far as Museums in the Chinese Mainland go. Designed by a global architectural dream team (3XN, B+H, and Zhubo), the building is literally shaped like a river delta. Its smooth, curvilinear lines mimic the surrounding terrain, so it actually looks like it rises out of the earth. The best part? You can walk right up its sloping sides to chill on a massive, green rooftop park that spans over 600 meters.

Inside, you can wander through five epic cone-shaped volumes and cave-like passages. It’s home to eight distinct halls taking you through a staggering 4.6 billion years of history—from the cosmic origins of the universe to the massive dinosaur skeletons that rule the exhibit. Plus, there are over 7,400 authentic specimens, including super rare meteorites and wild animal displays.

So, grab your family and friends, soak in the futuristic nature vibes, and go get lost in a river delta of dinosaur bones and stardust!
