After dripping out a series of “lyric videos” for songs from her sophomore album Meta Ego, Lexie Liu has finally dropped a “proper” music video with a widescreen work to accompany “Hide and Seek.”

In it, director Jeremy Z. Qin takes the Hunan-born pop singer out into space for an appropriately atmospheric tale. The song, the closing track on her 2019 LP, sees Liu largely shed the attitude-heavy hip hop that marked her break-out appearances on hit show The Rap of China, instead favoring more of a sultry pop feel. The slow-burning “Hide and Seek” also comes with a hook that’ll get stuck in your head regardless of how much you grasp of the song’s bilingual lyrics (though these are helpfully subtitled throughout).

Liu — who has previously cited Rihanna as a major influence — seems more comfortable in the role of pop singer than rapper, as she told RADII back in 2018: “Rap is not my main thing to do. I’m more focused on the RnB side. And I’m trying to connect these two genres and mix them up a little bit.”

The new video arrives two months after Liu made jaws drop on mainstream Chinese TV show Singer with her performance of “Manta,” also taken from her Meta Ego LP. That song, too, came with a slick music video late last year:

While the Chinese pop world was mostly focused on Kris Wu today — thanks to the release of his new EP Testing — Liu is certainly an artist to keep an eye on as well.
