Ne Zha 2 box office continues to rise, setting records and gaining momentum with overseas audiences.

20 days after its premiere, Ne Zha 2 has surpassed Inside Out 2 to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time. Per Maoyan Entertainment, China’s largest online movie ticketing website, Ne Zha 2 has amassed a total box office of 12.4 billion RMB ($1.7 billion USD) as of February 19. Maoyan expects the film to exceed 15.1 billion RMB ($2.07 billion USD), at which point it will have surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the fifth highest-grossing film globally.

Maoyan calculates Ne Zha 2’s average attendance per showing at 53 people, while other Chinese films on the top-grossing list typically average around 25, and rarely exceed 40. According to Ne Zha 2’s official Weibo account, the film will remain in theaters until March 30.

In Hebi, a small city in Henan province, one theater had 104 showings of Ne Zha 2 in one day. It’s worth noting that Hebi is where Ne Zha’s origin story takes place in the Ming Dynasty novel Fengshen Yanyi (The Investiture of the Gods). To satisfy demand, Henan’s Great Hall of the People has been repurposed into a temporary movie theater, selling out its 2,000-seat capacity.

Though a majority of the film’s box office is from China, Ne Zha 2 has also generated buzz abroad — especially for fans of last year’s breakout video game Black Myth: WuKong, where Ne Zha appears as a character.

There has been an uptick in Ne Zha discussions on the r/BlackMythWuKong subreddit, with some looking forward to a Ne Zha DLC pack (downloadable extra content). Reddit user Any_Dream_1502 commented, “Ne Zha 2 is a Must-See for Black Myth: Wukong Fans.”

The success of Captain America: Brave New World in American cinemas may dampen Ne Zha 2‘s momentum — it has limited the number of IMAX screens the Chinese animation will screen on, and potentially its appeal to non-Asian audiences in the U.S. One RedNote user in New York observed that the audience at the screening she attended was “mostly young Chinese people, with a few non-Asian faces.”

So far, Ne Zha 2 has brought in $9.5 million in North America and $2.3 million in Australia. Encore Films, the Singapore-based film distributor, announced that Ne Zha 2 will soon come to cinemas in Southeast Asia — extending its record setting run as one of the highest-grossing films of all time.
