BL, or Boys’ Love, is a TV drama genre characterized by homoerotic relationships between male characters. The genre is also referred to as Yaoi in Japan, where it began in the form of comics and other written fictional media. BL dramas are generally geared towards a female audience, and the genre has become a hit in China through the popularization of series like The Untamed, Word of Honor, and the South Korean series Semantic Error. However, the genre has also stirred controversy in China, where homosexuality is still taboo: China’s National Radio and Television Administration urged the film and TV industry to no longer adapt BL novels for the big screen in September 2021. In January 2022, the National Radio and Television Administration in Beijing banned the production of BL dramas altogether, citing the need for a “clean and healthy cyberspace.”
