Brian Linden was a blue collar kid from the US who knew almost nothing about China when he came to the country in the mid-’80s. Now he is actively promoting sustainable historical-based tourism with beautifully renovated heritage sites around Yunnan and expanding into the rest of China.

We visited him at The Linden Centre in Xizhou, Yunnan – a gorgeous courtyard property that once belonged to one of the great merchant families of Dali – to talk about his life journey from Chicago-based carpet cleaner to Chinese culture evangelist, his thoughts on the importance of sustainable tourism, and his hopes for the future of Sino-American relations in this increasingly divided world.
