The "Microduck"—an open-source AI robot manufactured in Shenzhen—can't clean your room or wash your dishes, yet...

We’ve reported plenty of times on the rapidly evolving world of robotics. From incredibly agile humanoid bots turning backflips to relentless robo-dogs patrolling the streets, and even robotic horses on the horizon, the future is looking mechanically wild. Yet, out of nowhere, the internet has decided that a tiny, non-functional duck is the robot we all actually need.

Meet the “Microduck,” a 25-centimeter-tall, WALL-E-esque robot duck that’s completely stealing the limelight. Developed by Pollen Robotics (under Hugging Face) and manufactured by Shenzhen-based open-source hardware maker Seeed Studio, this little guy is currently the hottest item in the tech world.

Here’s the catch: it basically does nothing. It can’t sweep your floors, wash your dishes, or do your homework. Its tiny pincer beak can barely pick up a sock or a marker. But that hasn’t stopped the hype. Within 24 hours of its launch at a highly accessible USD 399 price point, orders surpassed 5,000 units—averaging one sold every 4 seconds. The waitlist is now stretched into next year.

So, why the obsession? For the AI community, Microduck is being hailed as the “Raspberry Pi moment” for embodied intelligence. It’s completely open-source, allowing developers and Gen-Z tech enthusiasts to program it via reinforcement learning. Instead of being locked into a set of pre-programmed chores, users can teach this adorable Shenzhen-made bot entirely new tricks.

While the tech giants battle over multi-million-dollar AI chips, this affordable, ridiculously cute robot duck proves that sometimes, the future of AI is just about having fun.
