Finished binging the Netflix adaptation of Liu Cixin’s mind-bending sci-fi saga, The Three-Body Problem? Sad that it’s all over? Well, Legendary Chinese auteur Zhang Yimou just dropped a massive teaser at the 31st Busan International Film Festival, confirming that his own homegrown cinematic adaptation is well underway. Good news for us all!

Speaking as the president of Busan’s main competition jury, Zhang revealed that he and his team have spent years meticulously polishing the script. Taking a decidedly modern, Gen Z-friendly approach to development, the director brought on a team to scour the internet and collect over 400,000 comments from die-hard fans. All of this done to deeply understand audience expectations and ensure the film honors the sprawling legacy of the original novels.

“The Three-Body Problem is a great work of science fiction, but it’s hard to photograph,” Zhang explained from the Busan Cinema Center stage. “I will sincerely study the hopes and demands of the audience and hopefully make a good movie.” This comes from a director known for his films being picturesque masterpieces at any pause.

For audiences only familiar with the recent Netflix series, Zhang’s involvement is big time for Chinese cinema. Arguably China’s most celebrated filmmaker, Zhang is renowned for weaving stunning visual palettes and grandly staged choreography in sweeping epics like Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and the iconic Raise the Red Lantern, to name a few.
This upcoming project promises a Chinese cultural lens on the extraterrestrial epic, distinctly separate from the English-language Netflix series spearheaded by the creators of Game of Thrones. With Zhang Yimou’s masterful eye for cinematic spectacle combined with Liu Cixin’s vast universe, this is shaping up to be, well… nobody’s problem at all.
