Hong Kong’s neon signs are more than just advertisements; they are pulsing arteries of the city, vibrant markers of its unique identity. As these luminous titans slowly fade from the cityscape, visual agency Nous steps in with “Radiant Eateries: Hong Kong Restaurant Neon Sign Drawings”—a stunning new publication that doesn’t just document, but celebrates this ephemeral art form.

Helmed by Brian Kwok, this book is an absolute must-have for anyone obsessed with Hong Kong culture and innovative design. It splits into two distinct booklets, mirroring an archival document folder, with one delving into the rich history of neon and dining, and the other meticulously detailing 218 restaurant neon sign sketches. The genius continues with its binding: a clear acrylic tube, reminiscent of a fluorescent bulb, held by rubber bands, allows readers to disassemble and explore side-by-side.

Nous didn’t shy away from pushing boundaries. They printed the two sections on contrasting coated and uncoated papers, offering a unique tactile experience. Crucially, the neon sign sketches burst to life with an eight-colour process, incorporating actual neon pink, green, yellow, and orange inks. This commitment to visual fidelity demanded intense testing, ensuring every line and hue perfectly matched the original artisan’s vision.

This dedication to preserving history through exceptional design recently earned “Radiant Eateries” the prestigious Grand Award at the DFA Design for Asia Awards 2024. This recognition underscores the book’s impact, validating Nous‘ hard work and inspiring continued exploration into Hong Kong‘s vibrant cultural tapestry. Dive in and experience the radiant legacy.
