Already a hyperspeed city, Hong Kong’s creative landscape is no exception. It’s constantly evolving, with an eb and flow that feels more like a river of rapids. Floating around as a platform of solace amidst creative torrents is CRITICAL MASS, an experimental space dedicated to fostering dialogue, connection, and belonging among the city’s vibrant youth. For the past year, this community-first space has been a crucial hub, hosting everything from its bi-weekly HOUSE PARTY events at HEATH—situated within the basement of the renowned Chungking Mansions—and independent marketplaces, to community exhibitions, raves, panels, workshops, and more.

Now, they’re celebrating their first anniversary with TRUST THE PROCESS, an event that’s far more than just a party. It’s more of a collective creative output, showcasing the raw talent bubbling up from Hong Kong‘s underground art scene. In keeping true to its ethos, the event is about actively taking over spaces and creating moments where the creative youth can truly come together.

Since its inception, CRITICAL MASS has welcomed a myriad of new and established creatives. From graphic designers and rappers to tattoo artists, poets, and beyond, the space has consistently buzzed with diverse talent. As the very heart and soul of CRITICAL MASS lies in its community, it was only natural that its one-year anniversary celebration would serve as a powerful platform to shine a well-deserved spotlight on these invaluable members, culminating in this vibrant multi-artist exhibition.

As such, the TRUST THE PROCESS lineup features a diverse array of emerging artists, each pushing boundaries in their unique ways. Take SL0WTIGERS, a multimedia artist whose work delves into how digital identities are shaped by our hyper-consumer, hyper-online realities. Then there’s the whimsical worlds of Leah Putnam, an animator and storyteller known for her hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animations. Leah breathes life into surreal characters and dreamscapes, crafting dynamic visual narratives that captivate and challenge perceptions.

Literary artistry finds its voice with Seven Liu, an American writer based in Hong Kong whose insightful prose has graced publications like The Interlochen Review and Jardin Zine. Complementing this narrative depth is Southwest, also known as Lau Sin Ting, an emerging visual designer fascinated by movement and its translation into compelling spatial and experiential forms. Together, they offer a blend of introspective thought and dynamic visual interpretation.

Exploring personal journeys and profound expressions is James Kumar Rai, an artist whose work seems to spring from an unspoken, visceral feeling, inviting viewers to connect on an intuitive level. Similarly introspective and explorative is Dasha Shek, a Hong Kong-based artist who boldly utilizes drag and iconic pin-up motifs to explore identity and queerness, materializing the intricate path of self-discovery through striking visual language.

Then there’s the multidisciplinary spirit of MUJIN, the alias of Caius Man, whose hands are deeply immersed in the worlds of fashion, music, design, and bouldering. The other side of the aesthetic road is Debauchry, also known as Samara Lau, who is an artist and tattooer whose abstract and psychedelic art spans various mediums, inviting onlookers into vibrant, altered states of perception.

Marcos Micozzi & Hef Prentice are both Argentine collaborators who weave together sound, sculpture, digital design, and immersive technologies to forge new ways of perceiving memory, space, and time. Then we have steadyspiral, whose creative alter ego probes the intricate intersections between the self and the inner/outer world, and finally SPY!, a designer with a background in mathematics and computer science who uses computer language and illustration as his primary mediums, bridging the gap between logic and artistic expression.

TRUST THE PROCESS goes beyond being just an exhibition—and rave, with music helmed by the notorious S2 DJ crew. The moment is more of a testament to CRITICAL MASS‘s unwavering mission to bring creatives together. It’s a celebration of a year spent cultivating a vibrant community, proving that the spirit of experimental art and connection can thrive anywhere.
