If there’s one city that knows how to conjure a full-blown spectacle out of thin air, it’s Shenzhen. Going from a humble fishing village to a tech-fueled megacity in just 40 years, hyper-speed evolution is basically just muscle memory at this point. It’s the kind of place where a brand-new gadget can be completely cloned in Huaqiangbei before you even eat your lunch. So, when McDonald’s decided to celebrate 35 years of operating in the Chinese mainland, returning to its 1990 entry point in Luohu District to drop something wildly immersive like a playground—remember those indoor ones at McDonald’s?—felt more like a homecoming move.

As such, we have the McDonald’s x POP MART “Twinkle Twinkle” pop-up, focusing on the popular POP MART IP, created by illustrator Daxin, and centers on a group of tiny, starry figures who wake up when night falls to collect dreams and protect people from nightmares. Taking over two Shenzhen locations from April to July, McDonald’s has essentially morphed into a mini, interactive theme park—but without the pricey amusement park admission tickets—all you need here is an appetite for fries and a phone with full battery. The space is actively trying to bring out the kid in you with life-sized, highly photogenic set pieces. Yes, we’re talking about an oversized McNugget rocking chair and a fry log bridge.

Pop Mart’s collectible grip on global youth culture is already unmatched, but by turning everyday fast-food spaces into playground-esque “pop bakeries,” they are rewriting the rules of the collab drop. It’s an interactive flex that bridges the nostalgic 1990 golden arches with the blind-box obsession of modern Gen Z. Shenzhen has always been China’s entry point to the future, but right now, it’s just the best place to chill on a McNugget.
