Following his recent appearances at the US Open, Hong Kong’s top tennis player, Coleman Wong, made a triumphant return to home soil, leading the city to a decisive victory in his first Davis Cup tie in 18 months. Representing Hong Kong, Wong was instrumental in securing a 3-1 win against Uzbekistan in the World Group II clash held at Victoria Park Tennis Stadium.

The 21-year-old showcased exceptional form, sealing the tie with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 singles victory over Khumoyun Sultanov. This followed his earlier straight-sets win against Sergey Fomin. Crucially, Wong also partnered with Wong Chun-hun to secure a pivotal doubles point, battling back to win 7-5, 7-6. The electrifying performance captivated a packed home crowd, whose enthusiastic support underscored the burgeoning excitement for tennis in Hong Kong.

While being there in person would have undoubtedly been quite the spectacle, especially amidst the energy of Hong Kong’s crowd, these photographs taken by Hong Kong-based photographer Enoch Ho still capture the moment stunningly. Shooting in both film and digital, Enoch—who goes under the moniker Casual Grains—has built quite the portfolio of comforting images taken throughout myriad cities across Asia and beyond.

There’s an almost nostalgic undertone to his art, yet it feels equally new, unique, and refreshing, allowing us to appreciate what can easily be overlooked as mundane or everyday. A corner of a building, an array of plates at a cha chaan teng, or an old couple romantically enjoying a slice of their little town become visual feel-goods.

In the case of Enoch’s shots of Coleman Wong’s match, the sun-soaked sea of red sitting in the stands or a tight-cropped shot of Wong exerting focus mid-swing offers tone and feeling even when looked at in 2D through your screen.
