Stationed on Binsheng Road in the Binjiang district since December 1st, it’s a clear glimpse into a smart city ecosystem where artificial intelligence seamlessly integrates into daily life, promising efficiency, safety, and a touch of futuristic flair.
Hangxing No 1, still in its rookie season, is no ordinary traffic bot. It’s a sophisticated piece of engineering, developed entirely in Hangzhou through a collaboration between local traffic police and tech companies. Decked out with clear hand signals for “go straight” and “stop,” and even a whistle, it mimics its human counterparts with impressive accuracy. But its capabilities extend far beyond simple direction. This AI officer can identify common violations like riders without helmets, vehicles stopping over the line, and jaywalking pedestrians, issuing polite audio reminders on the spot. Imagine getting a friendly, automated nudge for stepping off the curb too soon—that’s smart civility in action.
What makes Hangxing No. 1 truly groundbreaking is its continuous learning model. Its gestures were trained directly from human officers, and its AI constantly improves by observing real-world traffic scenarios. Integrated with existing traffic-signal systems, it fluidly switches modes in sync with light changes, ensuring optimal traffic flow. The visual system, a critical component, precisely detects non-motor vehicle infractions, making Hangzhou’s streets safer for everyone.
Currently operating in both traffic command and civility guidance modes, Hangxing No. 1 is just getting started. Future upgrades promise even more scenarios and enhanced public services, including large-language-model capabilities for voice interactions, directions, consultations, and safety education. Hangzhou isn’t stopping there either; plans are already underway for the next generation of traffic-management robots and an ambitious vision for a full robot police fleet.
