Meet the nomadic artist collective flipping the script on traditional art education, turning 'shanzhai' culture into a radical new form of creative expression.

Imagine an MFA syllabus featuring classes like “Feng Shui Striptease,” an “ADHD Classroom,” or a workshop on “quitting beauty.” Welcome to Shanzhai MFA (@shanzhaimfa)—the “knockoff” art school that’s tearing up the traditional academic playbook.

Born in 2023 somewhere between Dali’s mountain retreats and the cultural richness of Chaoshan, Shanzhai MFA is a nomadic artist and theatre collective that rejects the confines of accredited institutions. Instead, they run socially engaged, low-residency art programs across rural China and beyond. Recently, these “vagrant artists” took over Cheruby, a hybrid art-and-fashion space on Shanghai’s iconic Changle Road, for a two-week residency.

The collective draws inspiration from centuries-old traditional Chaoshan iron rod puppet theater, embracing a traveling, pop-up pedagogy. They call their approach the “Drifting Economic Model”—blurring the lines between making the puppets and performing with them as equal labor.

In Chinese, shanzhai means “knockoff” or counterfeit. But Shanzhai MFA reclaims the term, using it to challenge established hierarchies in the art world. By relocating art education to the streets, rural villages, and pop-up fashion hubs where it “isn’t supposed to happen,” this grassroots movement is proving that true creativity cannot be confined to a classroom.
