Weibo’s generative AI bot, “评论罗伯特 Comment Robert,” which launched in December 2023, has become an unexpected sensation—and source of exasperation—for netizens across China. Designed to boost engagement, this AI chatbot quickly “went rogue,” delighting some users with its bizarre humor while infuriating others with its outright nonsensical or even offensive replies.

Comment Robert employs a large language model to analyze user-generated content, attempting to match sentiment and context. However, its understanding often falls short, leading to what researchers call the “Stochastic Parrot” effect. This means while the bot can make logical inferences, it lacks true language comprehension, resulting in comments ranging from hilarious non-sequiturs to cringe-worthy sex jokes and dark humor. One viral instance saw the bot respond to a user mourning a team leader “in heaven” by saying, “You too? My family and colleagues are also in heaven,” taking the metaphor literally.

What makes Weibo‘s Comment Robert truly unique, beyond its unpredictable commentary, is its interactive evolution and persistence. A March 2024 update allowed for back-and-forth dialogue, increasing its engagement capabilities. More notably, even blocking the bot doesn’t prevent it from commenting on public posts, albeit without notification. While it’s garnered over 700,000 followers, its antics have sparked wider discussions about AI‘s role in social media and user data privacy.
