According to Sina Entertainment, a South Korean firm has bought the broadcasting rights for the Chinese drama You Are My Hero, which will be streamed online with its original audio and the addition of Korean subtitles. The release date has not yet been announced.
Starring Ma Sichun and Bai Jingting, the 40-episode series is a screen adaptation of the namesake novel by Mu Qianyu and first aired on Chinese streaming platforms Tencent Video, Youku, and iQiyi in March 2021.
You Are My Hero’s plot shares similarities with the 2016 K-drama Descendants Of The Sun, which is still one of the most popular K-dramas on Netflix. The C-drama explores the romantic relationship between a young doctor and a special operations agent, causing some to describe it as S.W.A.T meets Grey’s Anatomy.
The acquisition news has been trending on Weibo, with 160 million views at the time of writing.
“You Are My Hero is going abroad! I miss Bai Jingting’s character so badly,” reads a popular comment under the hashtag.
Another Weibo user expressed similar sentiments: “Go watch it! It’s as good as popular K-dramas, if not better.”
More Chinese dramas are appearing on international screens, including the mega-popular show Reset (also starring Bai Jingting), which will be released on Netflix in select regions on April 1. Reset is also said to stream in South Korea.
According to a recent survey conducted by iQiyi, there is a steadily increasing global audience for C-dramas.
“Appetite for Chinese-language content is growing steadily worldwide, and iQiyi is paving the path forward. We are truly encouraged by the number of global users who want and are willing to watch Chinese dramas,” commented Kuek Yuchuang, iQiyi’s vice-president of international business.
