School’s out for summer! Last week, high school seniors across China sat down to decide their future educational prospects with the notoriously stressful gaokao college entrance examination. And 4 days ago, 22-year-old rapper Jinx Zhou released a music video for a new track called “GAO KAO,” which def isn’t about studying. “Dropped out of school now we gone rude!” she says:
On SoundCloud, the LA-based rapper explains that “Gao Kao” is the fourth in a planned series of 10 songs that she’ll write, record, and mix within 72 hours. The tight turnaround time puts some strain on this video, which calls out editors’ faults via strobing text at times, and often fails to sync Jinx’s lip movements with the difficult to parse lyrics. But that’s not really important here, it’s more about that conspicuous EDM festival consumption lifestyle and 95后 (post-’95 generation) memes I think.
