In a stunning pixel-perfect coup, A Minecraft Movie has just pickaxed its way to the top of China’s box office, toppling the seemingly unbreakable reign of homegrown animated juggernaut Ne Zha 2.
The blocky underdog managed to mine an impressive $14.5 million over the April 4-6 weekend, comfortably outpacing the former champion’s $10.9 million haul. This marks the first time in over two months that something has knocked Ne Zha 2 from its fortress-like position atop the charts.

For context, the Chinese mythological epic had been dominating the marketplace since late January, amassing an astronomical $2.054 billion domestically and over $2.085 billion globally. The film hadn’t just broken records—it had obliterated them, becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, even surpassing Inside Out 2 to become the highest-grossing animated film ever.
But the cultural phenomenon that is Minecraft—the best-selling video game with 300 million copies sold globally—proved too powerful to resist. Directed by Jared Hess, the movie’s opening weekend victory represents the strongest debut for a Hollywood studio film in China this year.

Industry insiders note that this power shift signals a fascinating evolution in Chinese audience preferences. While homegrown productions remain cultural touchstones, globally recognized franchises with pre-established fanbases are increasingly finding success across borders.

“Minecraft’s crossover appeal bridges gaming and cinema perfectly,” explained one Shanghai-based analyst. “Its universal storytelling and visual style translate regardless of cultural background.”
Whether A Minecraft Movie can maintain its position or Ne Zha 2 will reclaim its throne remains to be seen, but one thing’s certain—the battle between these box office behemoths is far from over.
